Digital image processing deals with manipulation of digital images through a digital computer. It is a subfield of signals and systems but focus particularly on images.  Video Analysis and Motion Detection collect and process the information from sequences of digital images.  Video represent the sequential images captured by digital camera.  Image processing and analysis use the temporal correlation from one frame to the next in the sequence. 

 

There are several main concepts and technologies that are necessary for image sequence analysis, such as image enhancement, image restoration, morphological processing, motion segmentation, background subtraction, colour image processing, object recognition, motion estimation both in 2D and 3D, tracking algorithms and model-based analysis.  Higher level techniques such as gesture or action recognition and video retrieval can also be utilized for the different application.

 

By utilizing video analysis or motion detection algorithm, we gathered information which may correspond to global descriptors of the data.  Those descriptors include camera motion estimates, can be used to identify motion as well as image panning or zooming, or even to detect and remove camera jitter.  Such information may also relate to objects in the scene, it is useful for tracking their presence, size, shape, location, direction and speed of motion, and other features through the sequence of images.

 

There are numerous applications involving video analysis and motion detection.  In security systems, motion analysis and detection can be used in surveillance to detect changes and abnormal events in a scene.  Motion analysis and detection also can be used to detect inefficiencies or malfunctions in a process of manufacturing.  Moreover, video analysis can be used to track and/or count particles such as bacteria or viruses in biology.  Besides that in the consumer and entertainment domains, video analysis, motion processing and detection can also be used for applications such as video key-frame extraction, digital video stabilization, video super-resolution, annotation and indexing, search and retrieval, enhancement and restoration, and special effects.
